FAQ

WHAT IS TALLOW?

Tallow is simply rendered beef fat. It is nature's superfood for the skin. Tallow is naturally high in Vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12. It has natural anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties which are all necessary for skin health. Tallow is extremely compatible with the oil that our skin naturally produces and is non-comedogenic; it actually shares a similar biology. That is one of the reasons why our skin is able to use tallow so effectively. Tallow is actually Latin for sebum.

Beef fat on your skin? I know, but trust me It will melt deep into your skin's tissues, leaving soft and nourished skin!

IS TALLOW-BASED SKINCARE SOMETHING NEW?

Tallow has been used in skincare for over 2,000 years. Rendered animal fat has been a prominent part of skincare products developed and used by our ancestors. Tallow was extremely common for centuries as the main ingredient for candles, soaps, salves, and creams until around the 1950's and then the skincare industry stepped in. Skincare is now lab made, full of synthetics, and our bodies do not respond to it as well. In 1866,  Dr. A.W. Chase, M.D, wrote about the healing powers of tallow in this article. Included was his “recipe book,” where he listed 10 formulations for healing balms – eight of which contain tallow. Your skin knows what it needs to heal and that is bioavailable vitamins and minerals from animal fats. Tallow is quickly making a big comeback in skincare.

WHAT TALLOW DO YOU USE?

We use tallow from 100% grass-fed, grass finished, pasture-raised cows, non-toxic approach to farming with healthy soil and an ecosystem free of pesticides and pharmaceuticals.

This tallow comes from only the suet fat from around the kidneys. THIS IS THE HIGHEST QUALITY SUET. It’s the purest, renders the cleanest, and contains the most beneficial nutrients. Most others come from lower quality, meaty smelling fats from the rest of the animal that are found through and attached to the meat.

The tallow is rendered and then purified at long times at low heats to retain the nutrients in the fat that are then transferred into your products.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE?

Nine months is conservative for our whipped balms. If you buy multiple tallow balms at once, you may refrigerate to extend shelf life. Salves & lip butters are 12 months.

WHERE CAN I USE TALLOW?

It’s the most versatile product you can own and can be used anywhere on the body. Dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, diaper rash, hand foot and mouth, sunburns, burns, cracked heels, rashes, itching, ringworm, athletes foot, rosacea, scrapes, scratches, scars, cradle cap, tattoos, acne and more!  Tallow is very compatible with our cell biology, it is readily absorbed by the skin so tallow balm does not result in a greasy look or feel. It is taken up by the skin as nourishment and softens the skin.

A little bit goes a very long way, unlike with most commercial lotions that contain a large amount of very expensive water. It is hard to find something that is as versatile and nutrient dense as tallow.

ARE YOUR TALLOW BALMS SAFE FOR ALL AGES?

Yes, tallow balm is beneficial for even the most delicate of skin.  We recommend you first do a patch test to determine if there are any unknown allergies.

DO YOU SHIP INTERNATIONALLY?

We currently do not ship out of the United States because we are not set up to comply with other countries' labeling laws.

WILL MY TALLOW LOOK AND FEEL THE SAME EACH TIME?

Tallow is temperature sensitive. It may get softer in the summer and harder in the winter. Due to the handmade nature of our products, we cannot guarantee an exact replication each time. Although we are consistent at creating each batch, there are different factors that can affect firmness in the products. Good news is melting does not change the nourishing properties of our tallow products.
